ancre
ancre is a Japanese bag brand launched by Motobayashi, a long-established company in the bag and leather-goods trade. Introduced in 2023 and released from February 2024, it focuses on leather bags and small leather goods conceived less as carry items than as components of dress. Its core offer is structured around a small number of material-led series, including Faber and ORIGAMI. The brand’s practice is organized through distinct leather developments rather than seasonal styling. Faber uses vegetable-tanned leather from the Tuscan tannery Orice, skived to 1.0 mm and drum-finished to bring out grain, sheen, and surface variation. ORIGAMI develops a paper-like leather by combining chrome tanning with added tannin, a hand-applied wax finish, and a final skiving to 0.5 mm, allowing the material to hold folds and drape. Across the range, hardware is reduced and construction is used to define form. What distinguishes ancre is its treatment of the bag as a study in material behavior and wearing relation. Within the contemporary Japanese leather-goods field, it departs from both overt craft nostalgia and fashion-driven novelty, building its identity through restrained form, engineered surface character, and a consistent attention to how leather can fold, hang, and settle on the body.

How to buy

  1. 01

We buy and ship it for you

ancre doesn't ship abroad. Honmono can order in Japan on your behalf and forward it to you — one contact, one invoice, no Japanese address needed.

  2. 02

    Use a dedicated proxy service

A proxy such as Buyee or ZenMarket gives you a Japanese address, buys the item and forwards it. Cheaper than a concierge, but expect forwarding fees, a longer wait and customs on arrival.

  3. 03

    Buy it while in Japan

Buy direct from the official shop or a Japanese retailer while you're there — tax-free at most stores on presentation of your passport.
